THE UNIQUE APPROACH OF DCS COLLEGE COUNSELING

Through a blend of in-person, residential learning with small groups and one-on-one college counseling, Delaware College Scholars is putting our students in the best possible position to find the right fit for college. The college application process is complicated. DCS works year-round with our scholars to introduce concepts like the difference between a liberal arts college, an HBCU, and a research university, as well as develop skills around how to research schools the summer before Junior year of high school. We then help scholars navigate the college application process by providing one-on-one advising starting Junior year. This includes assistance with completing college applications, curriculum-infused college essay writing support, and guidance in completing the FAFSA and CSS Profile. Our ‘special sauce’ is the time we come together as a program during the summer residential piece, replicating the college experience for our students. This approach has earned our program a 100% acceptance rate. Ultimately, DCS is preparing scholars for their ‘next’, and we will help them find the right fit.

COLLEGE FIT

Delaware College Scholars isn’t only focused on acceptance to four-year colleges and universities; we ensure that our students attend the best college for their personal success. Using a holistic approach, the DCS team provides one-on-one advising that takes into consideration each individual’s social preferences, academic interests, financial and scholarship aid, and more. Ultimately, our scholars find their fit when these three pieces overlap. Each component is equally important in determining where they are researching, applying to, and where they decide to enroll.

A scholar’s experience with their college counseling will include the following topics:

  • Identifying preferences and make-or-break criteria

  • Introducing different types of schools; How to explore schools; Navigating college websites

  • How to utilize the Net Price Calculator to predict their financial fit

  • Developing a balanced list that includes likely, target, and reach schools

  • Understanding their unique application profile and how admission offices will read their file

  • Exploring academic paths that lead towards their career goals

  • Personal Statement Essay workshopping

  • Strategizing around standardized test submission

  • Workshopping financial aid and scholarship applications

Additionally, scholars in our program have exclusive access to presentations from admissions officers at many of the region’s colleges and universities. As part of our residential program, students will visit area colleges and universities during the summer to get a feel for what may be the right fit for them.

COLLEGE PERSISTENCE

Our scholars are accepted to top colleges in the region and across the U.S. -- but DCS doesn’t stop there. We know navigating the college process is only the first step for first-generation college students. Therefore, we continue to support our scholars through their transition to college and persistence to graduation. Scholars receive personalized academic and financial advice, supportive mentorships, and leadership development as they work toward graduation.
