Recapping a Summer Online

Despite the obstacles of this summer DCS students and faculty completed five weeks of intense Humanities, Test Prep and College essay coursework. Students participated in classes from 9:00 am to 3:45 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, DCS faculty held “office hours” for their students to schedule meetings and discuss particular assignments.

Cohort 5 did an excellent job of staying committed and crossing the finish line of their high school careers. You can read more about their future plans here, including schools they will attend this fall. Congratulations, C5. We’re so proud of you!

Continuing to build upon their progress in last year’s Humanities course, Cohort 6 studied a wide variety of poetry by Langston Hughes, read “Passing” by Nella Larson and focused on contemporary questions of identity. For their final assignment, each student wrote a paper answering a specific prompt from the readings. Students were pushed to new heights beyond what they thought they could accomplish. As rising high school seniors Cohort 6 also began making their college lists, polishing their common application essays and completing the Net Price Calculator for each school on their list.

Cohort 7 students -- rising high school juniors, and the youngest DCS cohort -- jumped right into the heavy course load and were introduced to socratic seminar discussions in their Humanities classes. For their final papers, Cohort 7 scholars connected their class readings with the current issues surrounding the United States and answered the question, “The time period we are experiencing may ultimately be viewed as the new generation of Civil Rights. What does the text that we’ve examined throughout the program say about society in America?” C7 also spent weeks fine-tuning their reading comprehension and math skills in SAT prep.

In every cohort, students expressed their thanks to DCS Faculty

COLLEGE ADVISORY

Our advisory program is particularly special, as our advisors are former DCS students who give back to the program through sharing their personal journeys. This year, advisory sessions were held three times per week, allowing current scholars a chance to debrief, talk about any struggles that they might be having in class and learn a little more about the college process. Our advising team, led by Davashaye Jones and Aysia Beatty, went above and beyond this year meeting with individual students each week and helping with their coursework.

DCS is proud to have enhanced our academic intervention this summer using a virtual platform spanning over a month. As promised, we will work even harder and longer for our scholars – this summer and beyond.
