ChristianaCare

Over the past year, many of our scholars have had wonderful opportunities to shadow healthcare professionals at ChristianaCare. These experiences have had a profound impact on our scholars as they have learned more about their desired profession and what a typical day looks like. Check out some of our scholars’ experiences below.

Cohort 6 scholar Kenisha Napoleon visited the Delaware Neurosurgical Group in Newark and shadowed Dr. Tony Anene-Maidoh for the day!

Kenisha loved her experience as she was able witness the daily practices of a neurosurgeon, such as: taking a comprehensive patient history, performing a physical exam, and choosing which diagnostic tests to pursue to help create a treatment plan with the patient. Specifically, Kenisha found the physiology behind spinal disorders, such as radiculopathy to be most interesting. She also learned when certain spinal surgeries, such as spinal fusions, are indicated to help a patient’s symptoms.

Cohort 7 scholar Ammar Drame was able to shadow Dr. Jacob Anderson at ChristianaCare.Ammar, a sophomore at the University of Delaware who has spent the last two summers working for The Summer Learning Collaborative, gained valuable insight into the field of anesthesiology through observing Dr. Anderson and speaking to various CRNA’s.

Cohort 6 Scholar and Washington College junior Mackenzie MacDonald had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Toron, an Emergency Department Doctor at ChristianaCare Hospital. In doing so, she not only was able to learn more about the essential role Emergency Department Doctors play in stabilizing patients who need immediate medical or surgical attention, but was also able to experience the Emergency Department’s unique nature of a constantly changing environment.

Cohort 6 scholar and Delaware Military Academy graduate Joseph Eyiolowope visited ChristianaCare and shadowed Dr. Leif-Erik S. Bohman. During his visit with Dr. Bohman, Joe was able to immerse himself into their Department of Neurosurgery, learning more about the day-to-day operations of a Neurosurgeon in the office and in the operating room.

Cohort 6 scholar and current Norfolk State University student Bryce Raulston visited First State Orthopaedics for an entire week to learn from Nick DeCarlo and Dr. Craig Smucker. Bryce gained valuable insight as he looks to pursue a career as a Physicians Assistant.
