Cohort 2 graduate Elaine Ansah is a junior at the University of Delaware where she majors in Political Science with minors in History and African Studies. This past January, Elaine interned for the campaign of Lisa Blunt-Rochester, the U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district since 2017. Rep. Blunt Rochester is the first woman and African-American to represent the State of Delaware in Congress.
How did you navigate the internship process and in what ways did Dr. Alleyne help?
For me, the internship process wasn't too hard to navigate because of Dr. Alleyne. I emailed him to get a letter of recommendation for my application, and he contacted Delaware College Scholars Board member Lynne Howard to also speak on my behalf and secure my internship. It was incredibly helpful to have such strong community connections that could help hone in on my interests and make such a great internship a reality.
When in your internship, what did you do on a day-to-day basis?
On a day-to-day basis, I was responsible for updating donations and contact information for donors and supporters. I also monitored the Congresswoman's public Facebook page and assisted the Campaign Manager in the office. This could include packing and sending mail, doing research, answering phone calls, and more.
What was the most challenging aspect of your internship?
The most challenging part of the internship was stepping out of my comfort zone and asking for help when I needed it. I was very interested in everything we were doing, and I frequently asked questions to get a better understanding of the campaign process.
What was the most rewarding part of your work this January?
The most rewarding part of my internship was knowing that I was working to help the first black female Congresswoman for the State of Delaware. I enjoyed seeing how connected the black community in Delaware really is, and how everyone worked together to help Rep. Blunt Rochester maintain her position in Congress.
How does Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester serve as an inspiration to you?
She is the perfect example of a trailblazer and what can happen when you have a goal and work hard to execute that goal. Becoming the first woman and African-American to represent the State of Delaware in Congress is no easy task and she never took “no” for an answer. There had been no one like her before and she didn’t let that fact stop her. Rather, she kept going and now she uses her position of influence to enact change within the legislation.
What are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of knowing that I was part of an organization that is actively working to create change for underrepresented voices in the State of Delaware.
In five years I hope to be...
A graduate from the University of Delaware with my Bachelors of Arts in Political Science, with a Masters Degree or in law school. I hope to work with a global institution to create policy change and start global programs to combat many international issues, mainly education, climate change, and women's rights.
